Plein Air Oil Painting Workshop on Paros, Greece

Attention Artists! Painting Workshop!

Ron is coming to the island of Paros, Greece this spring (May 15, 2011).

To teach an outdoor ("plein air") oil painting workshop on
Paros. Ron is teaming up with Michael and Karin Shepherd hoteliers on, Paros, Greece.

Ron will be teaching "plein air" techniques
that allow the artist to complete a painting on site. Students will
paint two sessions each day,

with lots of one-on-one instruction in
composition, color, paint application, drawing and self critique.
This is not a beginner workshop, as students must have some
prior knowledge of oil painting techniques before
they arrive at this wonderful island location.

Each participant is responsible for their own transportation to Paros, but feel free to ask for advice. There are some tips on the Greece page of our web site. If participants notify Michael of their arrival date and time, he will provide them in April with exact bus and ferry schedules; they are not available before then. Generally there is a dedicated express bus from the airport to the ferry port for €3 that leaves every 20-40 minutes depending upon time of day. The Suburban Railway and the Metro also connect the airport with the ferry port. At the ports there are numerous offices and kiosks that sell tickets. Both ports are well signed in English—there is no problem finding the right places—except for mistaking Poros for Paros, perhaps! Based upon past years in May there will be a ferry at about 7:30 A.M., another in the late afternoon and a third late at night. The bus takes about an hour; the ferry takes between 4 and 5 hours or under 3 on a high speed. Anyone who telephones Michael with their ferry name will be met at the Paros port for free transfer to their hotel. If convenient each person should order some Euro from their local bank, as the exchange rates at the airport are quite high. Generally we recommend using an ATM machine at the airport or here on the island to get a week’s supply of cash at a time. $200 in Euro is sufficient to bring from your bank.

Accommodation will be provided by Paros Hospitality at a small hotel (called pension) contracted to us. Rooms are all spacious and most have kitchenettes and private balcony or patio. They are of traditional Cycladic style and of above average quality. All of our guests have been comfortable with their lodging. Workshop fee is set for double occupancy. Adjustments may be made for single occupancy or additional persons (non-painting) at our normal room rates. We are happy to accommodate those who wish to arrive early or stay longer. Transportation on the island will be by automobile. This will be available for the painting sites as well as to and from recreation and nightlife as necessary.

Tentative Schedule: Sunday: Arrival and settle in Gather for introductions and Dinner at 7 P.M. Mon – Sat (typical day) Breakfast about 8 A.M. Departure to Painting site by 9 A.M. Comment from a previous participant: I just wrote to Ron to thank him for his instruction in May Because I've been doing the most fabulous paintings this fall and I Attribute my success to his formula for problem solving when painting. It Has been a tremendous help. The colors here in Pennsylvania are spectacular Right now and I've been painting several times a week outdoors. Plein air painting can be daunting when there is so much to consider and Fall compounds the problem because of all that glorious color to contend with. Ron's method has given me a guideline to follow during the difficult times when I may have given up in the past. He has truly given me a wonderful gift. I am indebted to him. I would recommend his course to all painters no matter what their experience level.
